A private Grand Canyon day trip from Sedona
Your private tour takes you through Oak Creek Canyon (only from Sedona) to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Once in the Park you will be stopping at multiple overlooks, including the Village, Mather Point, Yavapai Point, Duck on a Rock, Lipan Point and the historic Desert View Watchtower. Lunch at the historic El Tovar lodge on the rim is included. We also offer an optional leisurely walk along the paved Trail of Time on the Canyon's rim. Sedona departures. Pickup is at 7:15 AM from your hotel, B&B or resort in our upgraded Ford Transit. You return at about 4:15 PM.
Your day from Sedona, start to finish
- 7:15 AM: Pickup at your Sedona hotel, bed and breakfast or resort.
- The drive north: Oak Creek Canyon, then views of the San Francisco Peaks.
- At the South Rim: Six scenic overlooks, lunch at the historic El Tovar and an optional 0.7-mile or 1.6-mile walk on the paved Trail of Time.
- Leaving the park: Out through the east entrance to the Little Colorado River Gorge and the Painted Desert, with a stop at the historic Cameron Trading Post.
- About 4:15 PM: Back at your hotel, bed and breakfast or resort after about 9 hours.

Your Journey to the Park
Sedona and Flagstaff departures. The drive is part of the day. From Sedona you climb the switchbacks of Oak Creek Canyon; from Flagstaff you skirt the San Francisco Peaks, the highest mountains in Arizona at over 12,000 feet. Then the forest opens out onto the Colorado Plateau — the vast, uplifted block of layered rock the canyon is carved into. Along the way, your guide shares the region's geology, plants, wildlife, folklore and Indigenous cultures.

Six stops along the rim: the Village, Mather Point, Yavapai Point, Duck on a Rock, Lipan Point and the Desert View Watchtower — Mary Colter’s 70-foot stone tower from 1932, looking east toward Marble Canyon.
Lunch at El Tovar and the Trail of Time
Lunch is a sit-down meal at El Tovar, the 1905 National Historic Landmark hotel on the rim. Afterwards, if your group is up for it, there is an optional 0.7-mile or 1.6-mile walk along the paved Trail of Time, where every meter of path stands for a million years of canyon history.
Painted Desert and Navajo Nation
Sedona and Flagstaff departures. Leaving through the park’s east gate, the road drops into the Painted Desert with views over the Little Colorado River Gorge — a striking, lesser-known canyon on Navajo land. The last stop is the Cameron Trading Post, a historic 1916 post on the edge of the Navajo Nation.
What to Bring on Your Tour
We keep packing simple — a cooler of water, Gatorade, chips and energy bars travels with us, and your guide carries the rest. To stay comfortable through the day, we recommend you bring:
- Sun protection — hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Layers you can add or remove as temperatures change
- A refillable water bottle (we keep it topped up)

Lifting Fog made Canyon even more impressive.
It started out as a rainy and foggy day. While the canyon was filled with fog, John took us to all of the passport stamp stations where we saw a movie and read about interesting info about the canyon. Then the canyon peeked out of the fog…amazing views as the colors popped as the fog lifted. We saw the magnificent Grand Canyon! I believe, because of the weather, it was even more impressive than when we visited before. It was not a disappointment! John was great at taking us places where the views were amazing.
Fantastic Private Grand Canyon Day Tour
My wife and I had the extreme privilege of spending an amazing day with Chris Kelly from Grand Canyon Journeys. Chris picked us up from our hotel in Sedona promptly at 7 am and we headed up to the Grand Canyon through Oak Creek canyon. Chris had plenty of water, Gatorade, and snacks for us and stopped at clean bathrooms along the way. He is so personable and shared his incredible depth of knowledge throughout the day. We stopped at many overlooks with beautiful views of the canyon and were able to get so many great photos. The trip is absolutely worth it and we had the best experience possible! Chris is such a professional and we look forward to our next trip to Sedona and another adventure with Chris.

Our family has a fantastic day on the private tour with Chris. He had water, Gatorade and snacks. He was very informative and took us to some amazing spots where he captured photos of our family! His knowledge of the area and the history was something we appreciated. Lunch at El Tovar was delicious and we even got to see a piece of culture with a performance of the Hoop Dance outside.
